What can ElevenLabs actually do for you?
At its simplest, ElevenLabs turns written text into a voiceover. Paste in any script, choose a voice, click Generate, then download the audio and add it to your project. For example, the text could be a YouTube video script, course lesson, product introduction, podcast segment or another piece of narration.
The useful part is how many choices you get without needing a recording studio. You can pick a ready-made voice, describe the exact kind of voice you want, clone an authorized voice, control how expressive the speech sounds and manage long scripts in Studio. The wider platform also includes dubbing, speech-to-text, sound effects, music and voice agents.
Choose from a wide range of voices—or create your own
You do not need to write a voice prompt to get started. The Voice Library contains many existing voices and lets you search or filter by language, accent, gender, age and category. You can preview a voice, save it to My Voices and open Text to Speech with that voice already selected. Some library voices are paid-only or use a custom credit multiplier, so availability and cost can vary.
When the library does not have the voice you want, Voice Design v3 lets you describe it with a prompt. The description can specify language, regional accent, age, gender, tone, pacing, emotion and speaking style. Each generation returns three candidate voices to compare. This is separate from the many ready-made options in the Voice Library. The preview text consumes credits once even though three samples are returned, and saving a candidate uses one custom voice slot.
Voice Design and voice cloning are different features. Voice Design creates a new voice from a description; cloning models a voice from audio recordings. ElevenLabs describes Voice Design as experimental and recommends Professional Voice Clones when the highest consistency is required. Voice Design v3 voices work with Eleven v3, while the current documentation says Eleven v3 does not support Professional Voice Clones.
Use Text to Speech for short scripts and Studio for long ones
In the website's standard Speech Synthesis interface, a Free-plan generation can contain up to 2,500 characters and a paid-plan generation up to 5,000 characters. Those are per-generation input limits, not monthly allowances. The monthly allowance is measured separately in credits, so splitting a long script into more requests does not make the generation unlimited.
Studio is available on every plan, including Free. It is designed for long-form production: import a book, document, script or web page, organize the material into chapters and paragraphs, assign voices, regenerate selected passages and export the completed project. A Studio project can contain up to 500 chapters, each chapter up to 400 paragraphs and each paragraph up to 5,000 characters. The Free plan can hold up to five Studio projects.
“Long-form” does not mean credit-free or literally unlimited. Studio charges credits when it converts new or edited paragraphs into audio. ElevenLabs may provide up to two free regenerations when the text, assigned voice and qualifying settings have not changed; the interface shows whether a regeneration is free.
How a normal user creates a voiceover
You do not need audio-production experience to begin. The basic workflow is:
- Paste a short script into Text to Speech, or open Studio for a long project.
- Choose one of the many library voices, a Voice Design candidate or an authorized clone.
- Select a speech model and adjust the delivery. Eleven v3 supports cues for emotion, whispers, laughter, pacing and multi-speaker dialogue.
- Generate a sample, check names and pronunciation, then regenerate only the lines that need changing.
- Download the finished audio and combine it with your video, podcast, course or presentation.
If the first result already sounds right, you can use it without editing the voice itself. Paying does not make a voiceover automatically better or remove editing; a paid plan mainly gives you commercial rights, more credits and additional voice features.
ElevenLabs charges credits per generation request rather than per download. The precise credit cost depends on the product and model, and the same monthly pool is shared across products. That makes revision discipline important: repeated full-script generations can consume the allowance faster than repairing a few short passages. ElevenLabs says a limited number of free regenerations may be offered when the content and qualifying settings remain unchanged, but the interface indicates whether a particular regeneration is free.
Treat the first month as a capacity test: measure how many credits a real finished project uses, including corrections—not just the clean first take shown in a demo.
ElevenLabs voice cloning review: Instant or Professional?
ElevenLabs separates voice cloning into two different decisions. Instant Voice Cloning is the faster option: the company says it can create a clone from less than two minutes of audio. It suits experiments and workflows where speed matters more than building a dedicated model.
Professional Voice Cloning trains a dedicated model from a larger body of voice data and is positioned for a more faithful result. ElevenLabs says training usually takes three to six hours, though queue length and other factors can change that. Professional cloning is included from the Creator plan, while Instant Voice Cloning starts with Starter.
The feature does not remove responsibility for the source voice. Use recordings you have the rights and permission to use, and test the result with the actual accent and material you intend to publish. A clone that sounds convincing in one sentence can still need intervention across a long or specialized script.

The page advertises Creator's first month at $11. It estimates roughly 10, 30, 121 and 600 minutes of Text to Speech respectively, but actual consumption depends on the model and other products used.
Paid subscription credits reset each billing cycle. Up to two months of unused subscription credits can roll over while you stay on the same plan, allowing a balance of up to three times the normal monthly quota. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits unused subscription credits when the change takes effect. Prices and allowances can change, so verify the live pricing page before buying.
Is ElevenLabs free—and is the Free plan enough?
ElevenLabs has a Free plan with 10,000 credits per month. Whether that is enough depends mainly on how long your scripts are and how often you generate them. If you only need short scripts or an occasional short, non-commercial voiceover, the free credits may be enough. If you regularly work with long scripts, create several voiceovers or regenerate many passages, you are more likely to run out of credits and need a paid plan.
Studio can organize a long script, but it does not remove the monthly credit limit. The Free plan also has no commercial license, requires attribution for qualifying non-commercial publication and does not roll unused credits into another month. Test one script that represents your normal length, then check how many credits it uses before deciding whether Free is enough.
Can ElevenLabs be used commercially?
Yes, under the conditions ElevenLabs publishes for its paid plans. Its help center says all paid plans include a commercial license for non-beta services when the user holds the necessary intellectual-property rights and follows applicable laws, the Terms of Service and the Prohibited Use Policy. It also states that content generated during a paid subscription can continue to be used commercially after the subscription ends.
Content generated outside a paid subscription cannot be used commercially, and ElevenLabs says beta services cannot be used commercially or in production. Commercial permission is not a substitute for consent or ownership: the source voice, script, music and other inputs must still be yours or properly licensed.
